123 M6880 歷史人類學與地方社會研究
Class Description:
Compared to anthropologist and sociologist, historians have paid relatively less attention to Chinese local society studies. From then on, many historians had devoted themselves to the studies of Chinese Local History as well as been more appreciated the value of local archrivals in their explanation of especially late imperial Chinese history. In this course, first of all, I will introduce scholars’ works on Chinese local society. In order to do so, we will read and discuss some important works by either historians or social scientists to approach the daily life experience of Chinese commoners. Throughout this course, the correlations between Chinese popular religion and local politics will be one of the most important agendas. Finally, depending on students’ language skill, I will pick some local archrival materials, such as local gazetteer, temple history, and inscription, to help students building their own understandings of Chinese local history.

Class presentation: 20%
For your presentation, you are expected to summarize briefly and concisely the reading materials (You should prepare to speak for 10-15 minutes maximum), explicate the main points and arguments, and then lead the discussion. Leading discussion means raising questions that lead the group to a more in-depth analysis of the material, and stimulating the conservation. A list of introductory questions should be distributed by e-mail to instructor and your classmates no later than each class meeting.
Discussion participation is evaluated according to the following criteria:
- Regular attendance
- Strong Evidence of having read the assigned material
- Thoughtfulness in relating readings to the questions posed, and to the major themes of the course
- Alertness to the discussion of classmates and willingness to engage in discussion

Short essays (reading notes): 30%
The short essays should focus on the related materials to be discussed in the following class. You will have FOUR opportunities to write TWO 2-4 pages short essays throughout this semester. The guidelines for these short essays will be given a week before each deadline. Your best grades will be used when determining the final grade. Late work is not accepted.

Final Book Review Essay: 50%
The final book review essay may address any issue related to class discussion in this seminar. You are required to submit a proposal to Prof. Lo by December 10 and schedule a meeting with instructor during office hour to go over your paper ideas. The length of an ideal book review will be 4-8 pages.

Below are the potential directions for your final Book Review:
-critical review of scholarly approaches to Chinese popular religion
-critical review of any historigraphical debate within the field
-comparison of some aspect of late imperial Chinese popular religion with scholarship from other times and places (for example, compare the literature on cults in late imperial China with that of cults of the saints in medieval Europe; compare the literature on the ancestral cult in early imperial and late imperial times). This book review essay should not exceed 15 pages, and is due on January 16, 2017
